The Law Firm of Norton Rose traces its history back to 1794. Although the firm began modestly, by the third decade of the nineteenth century the firm had become one of the most important in London.

Norton Rose grew to prominence through the Victorian railway and investment' booms. The firm's growth was due to the ambition and energy of partners such as Sir Philip Rose. He was at the heart of the nation's political life as the lawyer and adviser to Benjamin Disraeli. The firm conceived the first investment trust in the City of London and pioneered an international investment and political information service. Norton Rose acted in the longest and most sensational civil trial in Victorian England: the Tichborne Case.

The firm of Botterell & Roche, which was to amalgamate with Norton Rose in 1960, was founded in 1861 and first became prominent in national and international shipping matters in the 1870s.

This book uses hitherto unpublished material concerning economics, finance, railways and poli¬tics. This is drawn from the archives of the Foreign Bondholders' Association, the Foreign & Colonial, the Great Northern Railway and Disraeli's papers. The material which Andrew St George makes avail¬able for the first time here makes a substantial con¬tribution to social, economic and legal history.
