This book discusses the origin of the Court of Chivalry in the fourteenth century and traces its subsequent vicissitudes from the point of view of the civilians who practised in it.

Based on records recently brought to light in the CoIIege of Arms, supplemented by material from secondary sources, the account of the court here given differs fundamentally from that previously accepted by modern scholars.

Heralds and heraldry figure prominently throughout the book, but new light is thrown on a variety of other topics, including the origin of military courts martial, extra-territorial criminal jurisdiction, peerage claims, and seventeenth-century social history.
