In this book, formerly entitled An Introduction to the History of the Land Law A.W.Brian Simpson provides a readable account of the historical development of the common law of landed property. For social, economic and political historians, the subject is of basic importance; for students of modern law, a knowledge of the historical evolution of property law is essential to any real mastery of his craft.

In this revised edition, the original aim - to write a book which would make the doctrinal history intelligible to students - is unchanged, whilst work published since the book first appeared in 1961 is taken fully into account in the text, and the treatment of the nineteenth century period especially has been enlarged.
