Telecommunications is the vital cog in the new knowledge economy. Traditionally, when the industry was run by a monopoly, there was relatively little legislation or regulation. However, since the deregulation of the telecommunications industry in the UK in the 1980's, there has been an increasingly large body of legislation governing this fast-moving field.
