Provides an account and analysis of European social law and policy. The focus of the book is on law relating to the creation, implementation and enforcement of provisions which together comprise a form of social policy for the European Union.;The author explores both distributory and regulatory aspects of European social policy, addressing the central issue of the extent to which it is realistic to speak of a common European Community or European Union social policy. She is concerned less with issues of European employment law, concentrating rather on areas of the law where workers' rights are regulated, and where Community law affects individuals as people rather than as units of production or consumption. A particular focus for analysis is the ""gendered"" nature of many social policy provisions. The approach taken is subject rather than treaty based - for example, examining, examining legal structures, social security and consumer protection.
