Millennium Beaches describes how over -u5 billion is being spent to clean up Britain's beaches in time for the new millennium. Various innovative approaches have been taken by the water companies to bring bathing areas up to the mandatory requirements of the 1976 EU Bathing Water Directive as well as meet the Urban Waste Treatment Directive, which bans sea disposal of sewage sludge from the end of 1998. However the principle goal in most cases is to win the highest number of coveted Blue Flag beach awards, awarded to beaches some 20 times cleaner than the minimum standard, beaches which have proven econmic as well as environmental benefits. The papers are being written by senior engineers at the principal coastal water companies in England and Wales.
