This volume is the outcome of a conference conducted in 1999 by the Restorative Justice Group in the Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University. The contributions manifest the considerable ferment and innovation around attempts to crystallize a restorative philosophy. They also manifests a distinct history of philosophy being shaped by practices that ordinary citizens find remarkably appealing. As a consequence the philosophy now struggles to keep up with the pace of bottom-up innovation.
