The book aims to be the most comprehensive work for determining the type and length of sentence. Offences dealt with range from Parking to Murder and Terrorism. The new 2nd edition replaces Banks on Sentencing which was used by Judges more than any other book about sentencing. This edition is nearly 50% longer than the first edition, yet by using lighter paper is just as portable.
The book contains :-
- Over 1,050 pages dealing with over 410 different offences (in varying detail) describing the sentencing information for that offence
- Many of the basic principles for sentencing with a structured approach for determining the sentence set out
- A general index containing over 1,820 entries
- The maximum sentence for each offence
- The minimum sentence for each offence where there is one
- The mode of trial for each offence
- All the relevant Guidelines from the Court of Appeal, the Sentencing Guidelines Council and the Magistrates’ Association
- The pre-Criminal Justice Act 2003 sentencing powers with the start date and the end date where applicable
- The Criminal Justice Act 2003 powers with their start date
- The Road Traffic penalty points, endorsements, disqualification (maximum and where appropriate the minimum period) etc
- All the other special ancillary powers including, Confiscation, Forfeiture, Restitution Orders, orders disqualifying the defendant from working with children, the football banning orders, Sexual Prevention Orders, Sexual Notification orders and about ten others
- Two years worth of Home Office Statistics about the sentencing for each offence. These records were specially compiled by the Home Office for the book
- Over 2,400 cases most of which have a full summary
- A statute index with more than 1,500 references
- A case index with more than 3,400 references
The information is listed under each offence (or group of offences) and not just in isolation.
The book hopes to state the law as at 22 August 2005. It does not include all the latest tariff cases but I hope it includes all the guideline cases and legislation. The Sentencing Advisory Panel recommendations are not listed as the Court of Appeal points out that they do not change the law.
