The firm now known as Vizards was established in 1797 in Grays Inn by William Vizard (1774-1859). Vizard was articled to a London attorney and, after his admission to the profession soon built up a successful practice.

Vizard became actively involved with the Whig party and the administration of elections in the first decade of the 19th century. He became best known however, as solicitor to Queen Caroline, organising her defence during her trial in 1820, when her estranged husband, George IV, tried (and faied) to divorce her.
