This is a practical guide written by an employee compensation practitioner for accountants, lawyers and other advisers to unquoted businesses.

Tax law in this area is in a period of substantial change, with new rules on share plans being introduced in 2003 and significantly amended in 2004, and an entirely new pensions regime being introduced in 2006. Some previous regimes have been entirely repealed; others have been “grandfathered” and remain applicable in particular circumstances. More than ever, this area is a minefield for the practitioner who does not deal with it regularly.

The author recognises that clients will “present” with different problems: designing a package for a new hire; introducing a new “all-employee” benefit plan; determining the tax effects of an existing plan. Therefore the book provides different “entry points” from which the user can “drill down” to the relevant section.

To make this easy, the CD-ROM version has been written to make full use of the benefits of hypertext. Thorough cross-referencing with internal hyperlinks makes it easy to locate rapidly the answer to the client’s problem. Hyperlinks take the user to important external sources of information, such as the Inland Revenue’s website. Flowcharts and checklists enable the user to analyse a client’s existing plan, or determine what sort of new plan might be suitable for the client. Every proposition is supported by authority.

The glossary defines key terms which are then used in a consistent manner throughout the book. Clicking on any key term in the CD-ROM version will immediately bring up the definition of that term.
