Employment Law introduces the issues involved in the regulation of employees and their relations with their employers. It explains the framework governing employment contracts, dismissal procedures (including an updated chapter on the statutory dispute resolution procedures) and redundancy payments.

This new edition includes an expanded section on the relationship of employer and employee and how status is being determined by courts and tribunals, particularly in the context of agency workers. The chapters on discrimination, maternity and other family-friendly rights have been updated to take account of the changes introduced by the Work and Families Act 2006 and the Equality Act 2006 and subordinate legislation.

The latest changes to maternity and paternity leave, adoption and flexible working are included. The chapters on sex, race and disability discrimination as well as discrimination on the grounds of religion or belief, sexual orientation and age have been updated to take account of the recent decisions in Azmi v Kirklees MC and Glasgow City Council v McNab (discrimination on religious grounds), Martin v Parkham Foods (sexual orientation) and Attridge Law v Coleman (disability).

The book has been updated to take account of the recent House of Lords’ decisions in St Helens MBC v Derbyshire (victimisation) and YL v Birmingham City Council (definition of a public authority under the Human Rights Act). It also covers the key Court of Appeal decisions in Beckett v Hall and Thomas v Far (restrictive covenants), Coors Brewers v Adcock (unlawful deductions from wages), Burlo v Langley & Carter (principles for calculating compensation during an employee’s notice period) and Madarassy v Nomura (burden of proof in discrimination cases), as well as a number of important EAT decisions on the interpretation of the statutory dispute resolution procedures and procedural fairness, including City of Bradford v Pratt, YMCA Training v Stewart, Pinkus v Crime Reduction Initiative, Kelly-Madden v Manor Surgery, Loosley v Social Action and Lawrence v HM Prison Service.

Further revisions include details of the relevant financial limits on compensation, annual leave, parental payments, sickness payments and the national minimum wage. Flowcharts at the end of chapters have been updated to take account of all recent changes.
