This major two-volume work on employee benefits and expenses will prove its value throughout the year. At one level, the books will help with year-end compliance. At another, their aim is to help finance directors, tax advisers and payroll departments to plan the provision of employee benefits with a full understanding of the appropriate tax rules. By helping readers to avoid stumbling over the niceties of company car fuel, or the intricacies of employee loans, the books will pay back their worth many times over.

Between them, the two volumes provide a thorough and practical guide to the whole system of employee benefits and expenses. They are written by Ray Chidell (who has written on this topic for nearly 20 years) and Dave Jennings, an employment specialist director with “top 10″ accountants Mazars LLP.

New for this year’s edition

A huge amount of new material has been added for the second (April 2015) edition. As well as nearly 20 new A-Z items, there is a greatly extended chapter on PAYE compliance reviews, a new section on penalties, and coverage of many of the recent and forthcoming changes to the legislation. These include, among others, new statutory exemptions for trivial benefits (postponed for now), for reimbursed expenses and for recommended medical treatment; coming abolition of the £8,500 threshold and of dispensations; and proposals for payrolling of benefits. All examples have been updated as necessary, and all changes to tax data (official rate of interest, company cars, etc. etc.) have been fully reflected. The text is fully up to date for the March 2015 Budget and for the (first) Finance Act of 2015.
