This third edition of a text on Dutch law incorporates major changes such as the 1983 revisions in the Constitution, the loss of some of the liberal characteristics of the criminal-justice system since the 1970s, and the recent Civil Code and General Administrative Law Act.

The impact of European law has increased considerably, and the growing importance of environmental law is recognized by the devotion of a full chapter to this subject. Further amendments to the book arise from a continuous stream of case law and legislation. In order to increase the book's usefulness to foreign students, the original (mainly Dutch-language) bibliography has been replaced by a bibliography of foreign publications on Dutch law.
