The Last Lap...
I heard my last case at the Old Bailey at the November Sessions in 1955, and on 31st December of that year I retired from the Board of Doultons.

Eighty-three years make a long span over which to look back. I think of my earliest days and the wonder of them, of youthful endeavours at school and the splendid outburst into adolescence at Oxford.

I think of the hard years of struggle to get on at the Bar and then of my devils who helped me when briefs were many and cases clashed.

I think of my gallant friends and of their cheerfulness and courage and of those of them who have answered the ever lasting yea. I think of the work in the Courts and how I loved it, and remember with real regard all my learned friends and the judges before whom I appeared

I warmed both hands before the fire of life
It sinks, and I am ready to depart
