Dictionary of Legal Biography 1845-1945

The individual entries in this book relate to all those who, between 1845 and 1945 inclusive, held office or rank as follows:_

• Lord Chancellor
• Judge of the Superior Courts
• Attorney-General
• Solicitor-General
• Recorder of London
• Common Serjeant
• Judge of Mayor's and City of London Court ( or its predecessors)
• County Court Judge
• Serjeant-at-Law
• Queen's Counsel
• Metropolitan magistrate

It will be appreciated that a subject is often eligible by more than one of these criteria. A natural consequence of this arrange­ ment is that the period under consider­ ation is, in a sense, extended. Some of those still living in 1845, had careers which began in the previous century, and some who had qualified for entry by 1945, remained professionally ac­ tive well beyond that date.
