A collection of essays, three previously unpublished, that consider John Marshall's leadership role in the U.S. Supreme Court during the formative period of its institutional development from 1801 to 1835.
The collection includes a historiographic essay, a statistical analysis of Supreme Court opinions in the Marshall era, and biographies of Associate Justices William Cushing, William Johnson, and Bushrod Washington.
