Code of Practice C and Code of Practice H have been issued by the Home Secretary under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and have been approved by Parliament. They deal with the detention, treatment, and questioning of persons by police officers in terrorism and non-terrorism investigations.
Code C covers these issues in non-terrorist investigations, while Code H applies when a person has been arrested and detained under section 41 of, and Schedule 8 to, the Terrorism Act 2000.
Both Codes provide a clear statement of the rights of the individual and the powers of the police. Copies of the Codes issued under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 must be readily available in all police stations for consultation by police officers, detained people and members of the public.
