A distinctive feature of charities is that many workers within them are not employees. Staff may be employees, seconded staff or volunteers. Managing staff of varying legal status can cause difficulties for a charity. For example: what recompense can be paid to a volunteer without that person achieving employment protection? Does a volunteer have a duty of confidentiality? If a volunteer designs a charity's website, who owns the intellectual property rights in it and the supporting software?
