This volume contains the award of the Arbitral Tribunal established to decide a maritime boundary dispute between Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. The award is significant as it is the first ever delivered in a maritime delimitation submitted to arbitration under the 1982 United Nations Convention of the Law of Sea.

It established a single maritime boundary between Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago and required the two nations to take steps to conserve fish stocks and ensure certain fishing rights of Barbados fishermen who had traditionally fished in Trinidad and Tobago waters. The volume includes a commentary on the contribution of the award to international law by Professor Bernard Oxman, from the University of Miami.

  • Contains the first award ever rendered in a maritime delimitation submitted to arbitration under Annex VII of the United Nations Convention of the Law of Sea, making this of particular interest to scholars of international law and the law of the sea
  • Includes seven maps, illustrating the parties’ claims and the boundary decision made by the tribunal, and providing clear visual aids for the reader
  • Scholarly commentary by Professor Bernard Oxman serves as an invaluable reference guide to research
