Kenny's Outlines first appeared in 1902, and has been used as a standard textbook ever since. it was based on Kenny's course of lectures; it's success was founded on his gifts of clarity and common sense, and his perception of the cnnection between criminal law and the social sciences. He showed that criminal science is a composite subject of which criminal law ia a part.

The law continues to advanc and frequent revision of the Outlines is essential. The editor of this and the previous three editions, Mr J.W. Cecil Turner, was a pupil of Kenny and has had a long experience of teaching students.

The Outlines is now a new book, which owes at least as much to Mr Turner as to Kenny, but it does preserve the characteristics of the original. The 19th edition brings the work up to date by including references to all the recent changes in the criminal law of England and Wales.
