This book examines how international human rights law can provide a framework for addressing challenges to human rights which occur within the esports and gaming ecosystem. Divided into two parts, Part I establishes the foundations of esports and human rights, beginning with the meaning of esports, before examining the governance structure and framework for human rights protection. Part II addresses current human rights issues in esports, including toxicity and artificial intelligence technology, gender equality and female gamers’ participation, equality and fairness for disabled esports players, young gamers’ access to esports and age restrictions, and human rights risks associated with the anti-doping regime.
Drawing on international human rights law, the book considers how existing principles can be applied to these concerns. The conclusion brings these themes together and considers the potential for human rights protection in esports. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers and policy-makers in human rights, information technology, gaming, sports and leisure studies.
